Deva Cut vs. Rëzo Cut — what's the actual difference?

March 2, 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer: the Deva method cuts each curl in its natural fallen position, which builds rounded, voluminous shapes. The Rëzo method, developed by Nubia Rëzo, lifts curls at the root before cutting, which produces a flatter top and more uniform volume around the perimeter.

Neither is "better." They produce different silhouettes.

  • Deva is the right call if you love big roots and an undone, shape-forward look.
  • Rëzo suits clients who want symmetry, evenness, and a more controlled outline — often type 3b and tighter.

I'm trained at the highest level of the Deva method (Level 3 MasterDeva). Most of my clients are looking for that organic, sculpted feel — so that's what I do. If you specifically want a Rëzo finish, I'll happily point you to a Rëzo-certified stylist; the worst outcome is paying for one and getting the other.

The one thing both methods agree on: never cut curly hair wet.
